If your career is tied with a multinational company, you may find that the higher you progress in your career path, the more you might be asked to travel. In some instances, a global company may even have a need for your skills in a foreign country. At that point, you have to take a look at your career plan and ask yourself if this is going to work with your objectives or if you are better off finding a company that doesn’t want you moved. This is a very critical time in your career as a decision to stay put can also slate you for a reorganization right out the door.
There are many people who found that by taking an overseas assignment it has fluffed up their resumes and made them more attractive. Single people tend to do better with a relocation than a family person. Uprooting an entire family for one person’s career is much different than asking an individual to go overseas. You will have to consider culture differences, language differences, and cost of living differences. As always, be tactful in your approach to the offer and keep your career survival kit updated in case you can’t say no without jeopardizing your job.
