While the Internet has revolutionized job searching, it has also leveled the playing field so much that there is a glut of resumes floating about in cyberspace. In short, employers are deluged with resumes: Some statistics indicate that a single posting online is capable of generating more than a 1000 resumes received over the course of a few short days. Job search engines such as Monster.com or Yahoo! Hot Jobs make it simple for a seeker to post one resume and then sit back and watch it get forwarded to hundreds of listings, a tactic known as passive searching. But it has become all too clear these days that the days of successful passive searching are few and far between. Instead of passive searches, focus on using the search capacities of these job listing boards to narrow down your search. Usually there are still many niche jobs out there that hold a better chance for you to land an interview upon. In addition, consider more specialized job search engines, and also browsing through listings at the company websites themselves. You will also likely find information about jobs presentations that are being held by the company, which can also lead you to people to network with. There are also online resume service companies that distribute your resume to select groups of employers. Finally, supplement your online search with traditional methods including cold-calling, using print-based ads, and of course networking. The Internet is an invaluable resource but it’s not the only resource out there!
