Every plan includes a list of long term goals. These are goals that may take five years or more to achieve. The way to achieve a long term goal is to tackle it in little steps. It may seem an arduous ascent, but it is really the only tried and true way to get to the top of the mountain. Very few people get a ride in a helicopter to get the big view of job success. Always keep the long term goal in sight as you continue to walk closer and closer via small, short-term tasks. Each task that you complete brings you closer to your final goal.
Some long term goals that you might not be considering to be career oriented are still your direct responsibility. Along with your salary, you will want to think about retirement and health benefits. You should be working to ensure a sound retirement as well as a yearly income. The companies, these days, won’t do that for you. So, while you may be tempted to only focus on your career as a long term goal, there are other elements in your long range plans that should be addressed as you progress in your career step ladder. Neglecting any one piece can cause you to waste many years achieving a title only to realize you have forfeited a sound retirement.
